Invisalign

Invisalign straightens teeth with a sequence of clear, removable aligners changed every one to two weeks. Most courses run between six and eighteen months depending on how far the teeth need to move. Invisalign is available at selected practices. Our other practices offer other clear aligners, such as Spark and SureSmile. Your dentist explains the options at your consultation.

What it is and who it's for

Invisalign and other clear aligners straighten teeth using a series of clear, custom-made, removable aligners that gently move your teeth over time. They suit adults and teenagers who want straighter teeth without fixed brackets and wires, and who are prepared to wear their aligners for most of the day.

How treatment works

  1. Consultation and planning

We assess your teeth and bite, then plan your treatment. Where your practice has a 3D digital scanner, we use it to scan your mouth.

  2. Wearing your aligners

You change to the next aligner in the sequence roughly every two weeks, worn at least 22 hours a day.

  3. Reviews

Every 4 to 6 weeks we check how treatment is progressing and give you your next set of aligners.

  4. Retention

Once treatment is complete, a retainer worn as advised keeps your teeth in their new position.

What you can expect

  • Aligners are custom-fitted and virtually invisible
  • Removable for eating, drinking and cleaning your teeth
  • Your dentist explains the plan and what to expect at your consultation
  • Results typically achieved within 6 to 18 months

Common questions

How do Invisalign and clear aligners work?

Invisalign and other clear aligners use a series of custom, clear, removable aligners that gently move your teeth into position, changed roughly every one to two weeks. Your dentist explains at your consultation which system suits your teeth and what to expect.

How long does treatment take?

Most courses run 9 to 12 months on average, though depending on the individual case, clear aligner treatment can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.

Will wearing my aligners be painful?

Not painful, no. Invisalign and other clear aligners are one of the more comfortable ways to straighten teeth, though you may notice some tightness or mild discomfort whenever you move onto a new set of aligners, roughly every one to two weeks. That soon fades as your teeth settle into the new position.

Do I need to wear the aligners all the time?

To stay on plan, aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours a day. They only come out to eat and drink anything other than water.

Are clear aligners noticeable?

The aligners are virtually invisible and fit closely over your teeth, so most people won’t know you’re wearing them.

Are Invisalign aligners safe to wear?

Yes. Invisalign aligners are made from medical-grade, FDA-approved SmartTrack material, which is safe for use inside the mouth.

Will I still be able to talk with my aligners?

Yes. Your aligners are thin and light, so there’s a short adjustment period while your tongue gets used to them, but once that settles, you’ll be speaking as you normally would. Most patients find this happens sooner than they expect.

Is there a charge for the consultation?

An orthodontic consultation is a £25 deposit, taken off the cost of your treatment if you go ahead. After the consultation, if you decide to continue, you’ll come in for a new patient examination, and from there we plan your treatment before your aligners are made.
